Qatar Charity – Tunisia Office signed a cooperation agreement on Monday, October 5, 2026, with the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology at the institute’s headquarters in Bab Saadoun, Tunis, as part of a healthcare project aimed at providing 100 cataract surgeries for Tunisian patients.
The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Zayed bin Saeed Al Khayareen, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Tunisia, Ibrahim Abdulrahman Al-Janahi, Director of the Development Operations Department at Qatar Charity, Karima Boussalmi, Director of Qatar Charity in Tunisia, Imed Mallakh, Director General of Public Health Facilities at the Ministry of Health, and Rim Fekih, Director of the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology, along with a number of the institute’s officials and medical staff.
As part of the same initiative, an additional 100 cataract surgeries will be performed at the University Hospital of Jendouba, bringing the total number of planned surgeries to 200. The initiative will provide patients with access to specialized ophthalmological care and help them regain or improve their vision.
The initiative forms part of efforts to support the Tunisian Ministry of Health’s humanitarian and healthcare initiatives, while strengthening cooperation between healthcare institutions and humanitarian organizations. It also aims to expand access to specialized medical services, particularly for patients facing difficulties in obtaining surgical treatment.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, H.E. Zayed bin Saeed Al Khayareen, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Tunisia, said that he had witnessed the ongoing development of Tunisia’s healthcare sector. He also expressed his appreciation to the Tunisian authorities, headed by President Kais Saied, for the facilities and support provided to Qatar Charity in carrying out its activities in Tunisia.
The Ambassador praised the expertise of Tunisian medical professionals, noting the high level of competence of the country’s healthcare workforce. He reaffirmed that the State of Qatar will always stand alongside its brothers and sisters in Tunisia.
For his part, Ibrahim Abdulrahman Al-Janahi, Director of the Development Operations Department at Qatar Charity, said that the initiative is part of the organization’s healthcare programs implemented in several countries. These programs cover a wide range of medical interventions, including cardiac catheterization, open-heart surgery and other specialized procedures.
Rim Fekih, Director of the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology, said that the achievements made by the institute over recent years are further strengthened through this initiative. She thanked all the parties that contributed to the successful conclusion of the agreement, which adds to the institute’s ongoing efforts to develop and improve its services.
She also expressed her appreciation to Qatar Charity and the State of Qatar for their support, which will enable a number of Tunisian citizens to benefit from specialized ophthalmological care and cataract surgery.
